The sun faces the Earth. The Earth spins around on it’s axis. This is called rotation. Did you know that it takes the Earth 24 hours to make one complete rotation? Earth also moves around the sun. This is called revolution! One revolution around the sun takes an entire year! What actually causes the seasons is not the rotation or revolution. Seasons are created by the tilt of Earth. A tilt is a slant- Earth rotates at a slant. Because the Earth is tilted, different parts of Earth face the sun or away from the sun at different times of the year.
Opposite Seasons
When the sun is facing Earth, it is much hotter on our planet. The seasons with warmer weather are summer and spring. The seasons change depending on how much sunlight it gets. The hemisphere facing the sun has a warmer climate. Did you know that the seasons opposite in each hemisphere? Winter in the southern hemisphere means summer in the north! Georgia is in the northern hemisphere.
