Astronaut- someone who studies and travels to space Astronomy- the study of the sun, moon, stars and other things in space Astronomers- someone who studies astronomy (We are astronomers!!) Axis- Earth rotates on an imaginary line called an axis. The ends of the axis are called the North and South Pole. Revolution- a complete motion of an object around another object. Rotation- Earth spinning on its axis Seasons- patterns of changes in temperature Telescope- a tool that makes far away objects such as the stars and moon look closer. It lets us see things in space!
Sun Vocabulary
Main Sequence (see-kewense)- a type of star Corona- the outer layer of the sun Chromosphere- a reddish layer of the sun Radiative zone- the inner part of the sun between the Core and Convection zone Convection zone- a region of a star, specifically the sun filled with plasma between the core and the photosphere Core- the hottest layer of the sun, located in the middle of the the sun. Satellite- an object in space that orbits or circles around a bigger object.
Stars
Constellations- a group of stars that form a picture in the night sky Dwarf star- a smaller star that has a below average brightness and size Galaxy- a group of billions of stars held together by a force of gravity Lightyear- the distance light travels in a year White Dwarf- the remains of a star after it has collapsed Nebula- a cloud of gas and dust in outer space, visible in the night sky either as an indistinct bright patch or as a dark silhouette against other luminous matter Planetary Nebula-a ring-shaped nebula formed by an expanding shell of gas around an aging star Supernova-a star that suddenly increases greatly in brightness because of a catastrophic explosion that ejects most of its mass Red giant-a very large star of high luminosity and low surface temperature. Red giants are thought to be in a late stage of evolution when no hydrogen remains in the core to fuel nuclear fusion
Moon
Phases- the different views of the moon as it orbits around Earth Crater- a hole on the moon caused by a falling meteor. Waxing- when the moon's appearance looks larger each night Waning- when the moon looks smaller each night First Quarter – Phase of the moon a quarter of the way around its orbit from new moon. Full Moon- The Moon is entirely lit and appears as a full circle New Moon- the moon is not visible to Earth because the side that faces us is not lit by the sun Orbit- a path that an object takes as it revolves around another object. Satellite- A body that revolves around a larger body. The moon is a satellite of Earth.
